Neolithic- Petersfield Heath & Burial Mounds- Petersfield-Hampshire.
On a visit to Petersfield I saw a sign for ‘The Heath’. Intrigued I looked it up and the words burial and mound made it an immediate holiday destination. Friends of Petersfield Heath say;
‘Petersfield Heath has always been an important place for human activity. Around 21 Bronze Age barrows (or burial mounds) – one of the most complex in southern England, occur on the heath.’
Soundtracked by chiffchaffs and crows, I managed to spot quite a few mounds but also ended up going off piste and wandering around the lake. If you go HERE you can read a much more detailed account of the heath.
CPRE says;
'Some barrows were lost to erosion, scrub growth and development. Of the 21 that survive, there are examples of bowl, disc, saucer and bell-shaped barrows. This makes it one of the most impressive Bronze Age cemeteries remaining in south-east England.’
If you find yourself in the area then do go and visit. It is impressive and who doesn’t like a good heath?
